Why doesnt the US give up its helicopter carriers? There is no need for that there are enough aircraft carriers which can carry the F18 planes and that is good enough.

When you think of the U.S. Navy, it usually appears as a slick organization with aircraft carriers in the lead. But here’s the thing: The entire strategy would collapse if it wasn’t for the amphibious assault ships. They stay away from the showy and far-off missions. They’re the gritty underappreciated workhorses. Amphibious assault ships could be compared to the offensive linemen in football: their role is overlooked but they make sure things proceed.

The sole purpose of amphibious assault ships is moving Marines, equipment and vehicles over to enemy shores quickly. As soon as the rear door is open and water fills the area, hovercrafts and landing craft immediately head toward shore in a full rush. This setup means the Marines can come ashore fast without any delays.

It’s true they lack big fighter jets like an aircraft carrier but still provide a lot of airpower. Helicopters and the vertical takeoff F-35Bs join the mission keeping Marines covered when they land on the beach. They work as a floating air base offering close air support to ground troops.

Amphibious assault ships are often overlooked yet they’re necessary for the Navy’s land missions to happen. They supply the fighting force for speedy actions at the site of conflict.
