Your Meal May Contain Shark and This Is Causing Serious Issues
Shark meat has often been considered a traditional food whether people were aware of it or not. The product is often referred to as flake or rock salmon to appeal more to buyers. However eating it is a dangerous thing to do.
Many sharks have a very long lifespan and they mostly feed on small fish. Fish from these waters contain traces of mercury which is dangerous. The substance collects in the shark’s body over a period of time. Shark meat is known to be high in mercury. If you have too much mercury it may cause damage to your brain, heart and nerves. This is a major concern for children and pregnant people.
However there are other issues as well. The ocean can pollute shark meat with lead and other dangerous materials. It may also have a foul smell because of a chemical called urea which changes into ammonia once sharks die.
The most important fact is that sharks grow slowly and have only a few offspring. When lots are captured their numbers decrease drastically. It changes the balance of the ocean as a whole.
Bottom line? Eating shark meat is risky for your health and harmful to the environment. Sharks are essential for the ocean. We do not require them as part of our dinner meals.
