If the Soviet-Nazi pact had held, would the US and the Allies have had a chance against a Germany bolstered by all the armies it had fighting in the eastern front? Would D-Day have even happened?

What If Germany and the Soviet Union Remained Allies?

Suppose this: Germany and the Soviet Union remain buddies. No battling each other. Only one war — all in the West.

That includes Germany sending all it has — troops, tanks and aircraft — to battle the U.S., Britain and the rest of the Allies. No dividing forces. Just all-out power directed at France.

Could the West Survive?

Let's be real — the Allies only just managed to make it through with the Soviets on their side. Without that? D-Day could have been a failure. Normandy could have been a disaster. Germany could have sent the Allies back into the sea.

Germany's Risky Plan

Germany really did have a plan similar to this. Leave a few troops in the East, throw their best against the Allies in France, defeat the invasion then turn around and battle the Soviets.

It was trying to extinguish two fires with one bucket — quick and dangerous.

D-Day Ruins Everything

But D-Day didn't work out for Germany. The Allies did not break. Normandy became a long bloody battle. Half of Germany's tanks and many of its finest soldiers were lost.

Now they had nothing left to send towards the East.

Everything Falls Apart

Then the Soviets struck — in earnest. Operation Bagration struck like a hammer. With no intact German divisions to hold it back, the Soviet army rolled through quickly.

Meanwhile the Allies were breaking out of Normandy and dashing across France. Germany was unable to halt them. They were only attempting to flee.

Would It Have Changed Anything?

Even if the Soviets and Germany remained on good terms, it likely wouldn't have helped Germany. The Allies were just too powerful.

Germany's strategy to battle one then the other? It collapsed in a hurry. When Normandy became a nightmare, there was no escape.

Ultimately Germany was still outnumbered — and running out of time.
